Best Gas Grills under 250
It’s time to take a look at the features of these grills.
Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living
A Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living is manufactured by Dyna-Glo, a lesser known grill and smoker manufacturer who still packs a good punch into their products. The Smart Space grill comes in bronze or silver, but today I’m reviewing the silver version.
This grill has a porcelain enameled cast iron grilling grate that is 20 inches long by 18 inches wide for a grilling space of 360 square inches. The heating rack of 20 inches long by about 7 inches wide gives an additional 143 square inches, which comes to a total of 503 square inches of cooking space. The propane grill has a push-button start that delivers 12,000 BTU for to each of the 3 heating elements separately controlled by the front temperature panel.
This unit is free standing, the bottom is mostly encased and has a cute stainless steel door area to place your propane tank. There are two side workstations, complete with hooks to hang utensils, and these workstations fold down. The lid of the grill is large enough to allow a small whole poultry to cook, and it also has a thermometer at the top.
Review of the grill
This unit has some problems such as corrosion from the elements. While a grill cover helps a lot, the grill will still likely experience some external aesthetic wear and tear. Some grills arrive with dents and dings from the long delivery to your door, and you can call the warranty for an exchange grill if this happens to you. Lastly, some grills experience some issues with the gas regulator, creating a grill that is too hot or cold, and with uneven heating spots on the grill.
But the Dyna-Glo aside from those common problems is actually an excellent grill for the standard outdoor chef who wants to prepare burgers and veggies. The electronic start is very reliable, the grill heats up fast and thoroughly distributes the heat, and the cooking experience is very consistent, delivering the same great taste every time.
Char-Broil’s Performance grill has 475 square inches of cooking space, with the primary grilling surface being 25.6 inches wide by 18.5 inches deep. There are four burners, providing 8,000 BTU on a single burner and the one has its own temperature gauge on the front control panel, and an electronic push button to ignite them. There’s a warming rack that can be removed to provide more open grilling space for larger food items.
It is a full sized standing unit with two workstations on either side and a shielded bottom shelf with a molded cavity for a snug fit to your propane tank. The left workstation opens up to reveal a side burner with 10,000 BTU. The lid is not tall enough for most larger grilling items like turkey, but you could reasonably fit some smaller poultry like Cornish hens. The lid comes with a thermometer.
The low-down on the grill
Some of the common issues with grills, in general, are found on the Performance 475, such as regulator issues providing poor heat or uneven heat distribution, plastic parts weathering poorly due to not using a grill cover, and dents or dings from factory failed quality control and the transportation process to your door. All of the problems can be solved by consulting the grill’s warranty and contacting the company for a replacement.
On the upside, this grill is easy to assemble and the instructions are easy to understand. It heats up to a maximum temperature of a bit below 500 F within 20 minutes, with the touching surfaces of the grill, such as handles, being cool and easy to handle. The grease cup and removable catch tray are easy to clean and make the grill more enjoyable. This grill delivers great tasting grilled food.
Coleman Roadtrip LX Propane Grill
The Roadtrip LX Propane Grill is a collapsible and portable grill unit made by the camping and outdoor supplies company Coleman. It uses the portable camping propane bottles and powers two cooking areas to the right and left side with a flat surface to double as a griddle and cooking pan for foods such as eggs or beans, and the right side a grill area for vegetables, meats or seafood, with individually controlled temperatures for each side.
It has two workstation areas that completely fold into the grill. The legs are tall enough to sit on the ground and cook or to place on a table and cook standing upright.
Thoughts on the Coleman Roadtrip LX Propane Grill
Like all things made of metal, grills especially, the Coleman Roadtrip LX will rust if you leave it exposed to the elements. Being small and portable, there isn’t a designated grill cover for this model, but you can keep it in your tent when it is raining and keep it in a cool, dry place in storage, or at least keep it covered with something.
Aside from that, the Coleman Roadtrip LX is a great grill for cooking enthusiasts who are on the go, like road trippers or RV campers, and it’s small enough to fold up in an easily stored size. It’s sturdy, steady, and cooks food very well. Are you a camping lover? Here are portable camping grills.
I found that the Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living and Char-Broil Performance 475 were the best full-sized propane grills in the 250 price range. For travelers and outdoor lovers, the Coleman Roadtrip LX Propane Grill would be a great addition to your lifestyle.
